The CULTURALITY project, coordinated locally by CULTURALITY researcher Olaya Alonso López from partner institution Espacio Tormaleo, recently organized the Rural Event “Legado Artesano”.
Developed in collaboration with the seventh edition of the “Festival de Ecoturismo en Peligro de Extinción” (Ecotourism in Danger of Extinction Festival), this initiative focuses on the preservation, transmission, and revitalization of traditional crafts and rural knowledge within the Fuentes del Narcea region, encompassing the municipalities of Cangas del Narcea, Degaña, and Ibias.
The core activities began on Saturday, May 9, 2026, during the “III Mercado Natural y Artesano” (III Natural and Artisan Market). Despite challenging weather conditions during the afternoon, the “Legado Artesano” space effectively served as a meeting point between artisans and the public, encouraging dialogue concerning traditional knowledge, materials, techniques, and contemporary rural creativity.
Throughout the day, visitors interacted with artisans and participated in hands-on workshops and demonstrations. The activities included black pottery workshops, felt-making, traditional butter-making, basketry, and mothercraft demonstrations, as well as conversations regarding beekeeping and local craftsmanship. The workshops proved particularly successful with younger audiences. Crafts such as black pottery, traditional basketry, and mothercraft generated significant curiosity and storytelling exchanges between artisans and visitors, who inquired about the materials, techniques, and cultural background behind each practice.

The event also featured a live podcast conversation during the afternoon, establishing a relaxed and informal atmosphere that connected visitors, organizers, and cultural actors. The gathering strengthened relationships with local artisans and stakeholders, generating discussions that will inform future CULTURALITY activities and stakeholder meetings.
The “Legado Artesano” Rural Event continued throughout May 2026 with a series of Open Workshops, where artisans welcome participants interested in learning professional craft practices. The initiative will conclude with an Artisan Hackathon on June 6, 2026, during the Narcenatur Fair, aimed at discussing current challenges and future solutions for traditional rural crafts. Through these activities, the project seeks to strengthen rural cultural heritage while encouraging new professional and creative opportunities linked to craftsmanship and sustainable local development.
